12. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אָמַר, הֲרֵי נִתְבָּאֵר אוֹתוֹ לַיְלָה שִׁלְטוֹן שֶׁל צַד שֶׁל עֵשָׂו הָיָה בְּאוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה, שֶׁהֲרֵי כָּתוּב (בראשית א) יְהִי מְאֹרֹת חָסֵר, וּמִשּׁוּם כָּךְ וַיִּוָּתֵר יַעֲקֹב לְבַדּוֹ, שֶׁנִּשְׁאַר יַעֲקֹב, שֶׁהוּא שֶׁמֶשׁ לְבַדּוֹ, שֶׁהִתְכַּסְּתָה הַלְּבָנָה מִן הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ. וְאַף עַל גַּב שֶׁשְּׁמִירַת [וְעִם כָּל זֶה הַשְּׁמִירָה שֶׁל] הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לֹא זָזָה מִמֶּנּוּ מִכֹּל וָכֹל, וְעַל זֶה לֹא יָכֹל לוֹ, שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיַּרְא כִּי לֹא יָכֹל לוֹ.

Genesis 32:25<\/a>
\n“וַיִּוָּתֵר יַעֲקֹב, לְבַדּוֹ; וַיֵּאָבֵק אִישׁ עִמּוֹ, עַד עֲלוֹת הַשָּׁחַר.”
\n“And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.”<\/p>\n

Jacob was ready for the battle. His life with Laban was a constant fight against the negative side. He followed the spiritual laws of the Torah and had complete faith<\/a> and trust in God. His purity was so high that Laban couldn’t hurt him. Now Jacob is facing the angel of the other side<\/a>, fighting all night long.<\/p>\n

Genesis 32:26<\/a>
\n“וַיַּרְא, כִּי לֹא יָכֹל לוֹ, וַיִּגַּע, בְּכַף-יְרֵכוֹ; וַתֵּקַע כַּף-יֶרֶךְ יַעֲקֹב, בְּהֵאָבְקוֹ עִמּוֹ.”
\n“When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.”<\/p>\n

The Zohar explains that the angel couldn’t prevail because on the right side of Jacob was Abraham, that is the perfection of the Right Column<\/a>. On the left was Isaac that is the perfection of the Left Column<\/a> and Jacob himself was the perfection of the Central column. The other side<\/a> can not get to us unless there is a place of lack. At the end of the night, the angel could only touch a weak point outside Jacob’s body that affected Jacob’s leg.<\/p>\n

The Zohar quotes again Psalms 34:8<\/a>
\n“חֹנֶה מַלְאַךְ-יְהוָה סָבִיב לִירֵאָיו; וַיְחַלְּצֵם”
\n“The angel of YHVH<\/a> encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them”<\/p>\n

When we study the Zohar, which is the highest level of Torah study, we create and own a protective shield around us that is activated when we need it.<\/p>\n
