27. שָׁמַע אוֹתוֹ לִגְיוֹן וּפָחַד. אָמַר: יָפֶה שֶׁאֵלֵךְ עִמּוֹ וְאֶתְפַּיֵּס עִמּוֹ. עַד שֶׁרָאָה אוֹתוֹ אוֹתוֹ הָאִישׁ, אָמַר: אוֹי וַאֲבוֹי שֶׁעַכְשָׁו יַהֲרֹג אוֹתוֹ אוֹתוֹ הַלִּגְיוֹן. הִתְחִיל לְהִשְׁתַּחֲווֹת וְלִכְרֹעַ כְּנֶגְדּוֹ. אָמַר אוֹתוֹ לִגְיוֹן: אִלְמָלֵא הָיָה לוֹ בְּיָדוֹ נָחָשׁ לַהֲרֹג, לֹא הָיָה מִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה כָּל זֶה כְּנֶגְדִּי. הִתְחִיל הַלִּגְיוֹן לְהִתְגָּאוֹת. אָמַר: הוֹאִיל וְכָל כָּךְ כָּרַע לְנֶגְדִּי, לֹא אֶהֱרֹג אוֹתוֹ.
\n28. כָּךְ אָמַר יַעֲקֹב, עִם לָבָן גַּרְתִּי וָאַחֵר עַד עָתָּה. עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה הִתְאַחַרְתִּי עִמּוֹ, וַאֲנִי מֵבִיא נָחָשׁ לַהֲרֹג בְּנֵי אָדָם. שָׁמַע עֵשָׂו, אָמַר, אוֹי מִי יָקוּם לְפָנָיו, שֶׁעַכְשָׁו יַהֲרֹג אוֹתוֹ יַעֲקֹב בְּפִיו. הִתְחִיל לָצֵאת כְּנֶגְדּוֹ לְהִתְפַּיֵּס עִמּוֹ.
\n29. כֵּיוָן שֶׁרָאָה אוֹתוֹ מַה כָּתוּב? וַיִּירָא יַעֲקֹב מְאֹד וַיֵּצֶר לוֹ. כֵּיוָן שֶׁקָּרַב אֵלָיו, הִתְחִיל לִכְרֹעַ וְלִסְגֹּד לְפָנָיו, זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַרְצָה שֶׁבַע פְּעָמִים עַד גִּשְׁתּוֹ עַד אָחִיו. אָמַר עֵשָׂו, אִלְמָלֵא כָּל כָּךְ הָיָה עִמּוֹ, לֹא יִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה כְּנֶגְדִּי. הִתְחִיל לְהִתְגָּאוֹת.<\/div>\n

\nContinued from previous DZ<\/p>\n

Even though Jacob sent a message of strength to Esau, he knew that the future is always in the hands of God so before meeting with Esau he prayed saying;<\/p>\n

Genesis 32:10<\/a>
\n“וַיֹּאמֶר, יַעֲקֹב, אֱלֹהֵי אָבִי אַבְרָהָם, וֵאלֹהֵי אָבִי יִצְחָק: יְהוָה הָאֹמֵר אֵלַי, שׁוּב לְאַרְצְךָ וּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָ–וְאֵיטִיבָה עִמָּךְ”
\n“Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O YHVH<\/a>, who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,’”<\/p>\n

Jacob addresses God as the God of Abraham and Isaac. He knew that the Light comes to him through the merits of Abraham and Isaac. He also tells God that he follows his commands. In the next verse Jacob belittles himself to create a worthy vessel to receive the protection of God.<\/p>\n

Genesis 32:11<\/a> “I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.”<\/p>\n

Now that Jacob made a connection and prepared his vessel, he can express his request.<\/p>\n

Genesis 32:12<\/a>
\n“ הַצִּילֵנִי נָא מִיַּד אָחִי, מִיַּד עֵשָׂו: כִּי-יָרֵא אָנֹכִי, אֹתוֹ–פֶּן-יָבוֹא וְהִכַּנִי, אֵם עַל-בָּנִים”
\n“Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children.”<\/p>\n

Jacob didn’t just ask for his protection, he also asked for those who are dependent on him.<\/p>\n

Lessons:
\nWe learn from Jacob that even if we are righteous and follow the laws of the Torah, we can’t tell what may happen next. We can never be overconfident with the power that we have because anything can change in a split seconds.<\/p>\n

We need to humble ourselves and pray for protection while including others who share the same needs. Asking for the self alone means a desire for the self and that may draw judgments unless the person is in life threatening situation. Even then, that person needs to express reasons to why he deserve to have a miracle.<\/p>\n
