60. יוֹם אֶחָד הָיוּ הַחֲבֵרִים יוֹשְׁבִים וּמִתְנַגְּחִים אֵלֶּה בְאֵלֶּה, וְהָיוּ שָׁם רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר וְרַבִּי אַבָּא וְרַבִּי חִיָּיא וְרַבִּי יוֹסֵי וּשְׁאָר הַחֲבֵרִים. אָמְרוּ, הֲרֵי כָּתוּב (דברים ב) אַל תָּצַר אֶת מוֹאָב וְאַל תִּתְגָּר בָּם מִלְחָמָה וְגוֹ’. בִּגְלַל רוּת וְנַעֲמָה שֶׁהָיוּ עֲתִידִים לָצֵאת מֵהֶם. צִפּוֹרָה אֵשֶׁת מֹשֶׁה שֶׁהָיְתָה מִמִּדְיָן, וְיִתְרוֹ וּבָנָיו שֶׁיָּצְאוּ מִמִּדְיָן, שֶׁהָיוּ כֻלָּם צַדִּיקֵי אֱמֶת, עַל אַחַת כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה. וְעוֹד מֹשֶׁה שֶׁגִּדְּלוּהוּ בְמִדְיָן, וְאָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, (במדבר לא) נְקֹם נִקְמַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֵת הַמִּדְיָנִים. אִם כָּךְ, מַשּׂוֹא פָנִים יֵשׁ בַּדָּבָר, שֶׁיּוֹתֵר רְאוּיִם בְּנֵי מִדְיָן לְהִנָּצֵל מִמּוֹאָב.
\n61. אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, לֹא דוֹמֶה מִי שֶׁעָתִיד לִלְקֹט תְּאֵנִים לְמִי שֶׁכְּבָר לִקֵּט אוֹתָן. אָמַר לוֹ רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, אַף עַל גַּב שֶׁכְּבָר לִקֵּט לָהֶם, שֶׁבַח הוּא. אָמַר לוֹ, מִי שֶׁלֹּא לִקֵּט תְּאֵנִים, שׁוֹמֵר אֶת הַתְּאֵנָה תָּמִיד שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיֶה בָּהּ פְּגָם בִּשְׁבִיל הַתְּאֵנִים שֶׁעֲתִידָה לְהָבִיא. כֵּיוָן שֶׁלִּקֵּט תְּאֵנִים, עוֹזֵב אֶת הַתְּאֵנָה, וְיוֹתֵר לֹא שׁוֹמֵר אוֹתָהּ.<\/div>\n

\nThe students of rabbi Shimon were studying and discussing the verse in Deuteronomy 2:9<\/a>
\n“וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֵלַי, אַל-תָּצַר אֶת-מוֹאָב, וְאַל-תִּתְגָּר בָּם, מִלְחָמָה: כִּי לֹא-אֶתֵּן לְךָ מֵאַרְצוֹ, יְרֻשָּׁה–כִּי לִבְנֵי-לוֹט, נָתַתִּי אֶת-עָר יְרֻשָּׁה”
\n“”Then YHVH<\/a> said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot as a possession.”
\nThey explained that Ruth will be born to Moab, convert and from her the comes Mashiach. Because of that Moab received the protection of God.
\nNumbers 31:2<\/a>
\n“נְקֹם, נִקְמַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵאֵת, הַמִּדְיָנִים; אַחַר, תֵּאָסֵף אֶל-עַמֶּיךָ”
\n“Take full vengeance for the sons of Israel<\/a> on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people.””
\nThe students said that Jethro and Tziporah, Moses’s wife, came from Midian and why weren’t they protected. Where was Moses’s protection? It looks like they have greater merits than Moab to be protected.
\nRabbi Shimon explained that Ruth didn’t yet come out of Moab so they needed protection. Jethro and Tziporah already left the Midianites and they didn’t need protection and the Israelites<\/a> could take revenge from them.
