26. אָמַר לָהֶם, (מלכים-א כ) אַל יִתְהַלֵּל חוֹגֵר כִּמְפַתֵּחַ. שֶׁהֲרֵי וַדַּאי בִּקְרִיאַת שְׁמַע פֵּרְשׁוּהָ, כָּל הַקּוֹרֵא קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע עַל מִטָּתוֹ, כְּאִלּוּ אוֹחֵז חֶרֶב פִּיפִיּוֹת, שֶׁכָּתוּב (תהלים קמט) רוֹמְמוֹת אֵל בִּגְרוֹנָם וְחֶרֶב פִּיפִיּוֹת בְּיָדָם. וְנִעְנוּעַ הַחֶרֶב צָרִיךְ לְנַעְנְעָהּ לְשִׁשָּׁה צְדָדִים, כְּמוֹ שֶׁבֵּאֲרוּהָ, כְּדֵי שֶׁתַּמְלִיכוּהוּ עַל הַשָּׁמַיִם וְעַל הָאָרֶץ וְעַל אַרְבַּע רוּחוֹת הָעוֹלָם. וְזוֹ ו’, גּוּף הַחֶרֶב. י’ רֹאשׁ הַחֶרֶב. ה”ה, שְׁתֵּי פִיפִיּוֹת. נַרְתִּיק הַחֶרֶב, אֲדֹנָי.
\n27. רֹמַח, רמ”ח בַּקְּרִיאַת שְׁמַע, עִם שֵׁשׁ תֵּבוֹת הַיִּחוּד, הֲרֵי רוֹמַ”ח. מָגֵ”ן עִם חֶרֶב, מִיכָאֵל גַּבְרִיאֵל נוּרִיאֵל, הַשַּׁמָּשִׁים שֶׁל שְׁלֹשֶׁת הָאָבוֹת. קֶשֶׁת שֶׁיּוֹרָה חִצִּים, וְכָל זֶרַע שֶׁאֵינוֹ יוֹרֶה כַּחֵץ אֵינוֹ מוֹלִיד. מַקְלֵעַ, זֶה קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע. חֲמִשָּׁה אַבְנֵי מַקְלֵעַ, (דברים ו) שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל ה’ אֱלֹהֵינוּ ה’. כְּנֶגְדָּם, וַיִּקַּח דָּוִד (שמואל-א יז) חֲמִשָּׁה חַלֻּקֵי אֲבָנִים מִן הַנַּחַל. וּכְשֶׁשָּׂם אוֹתָם בַּמַּקְלֵעַ, שֶׁהִיא שָׂפָה, וְהִיא שְׁכִינָה, נַעֲשׂוּ אֶחָד כָּל הַחֲמִשָּׁה, וְהָרַג אֶת הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי.\n<\/div>\n

\nZohar Ekev<\/strong>
\nIt’s interesting that by divine providence, we continue the subject of the Shema prayers; even though we moved from the portion of Vaetchanan to Ekev, we are blessed with additional study of the Shema Israel<\/a> prayer.
\nThe Zohar teaches us that whoever reads the Shema is as if he is holding a double edge sword.
\nPsalms 149:6<\/a>
\n“רוֹמְמוֹת אֵל בִּגְרוֹנָם וְחֶרֶב פִּיפִיּוֹת בְּיָדָם.”
\n“Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, And a two-edged sword in their hand,”

\nThe ‘sword’ is the aspect of the letter Vav ו that represents Zeir Anpin<\/a>. The Yod י is the tip of the sword, and the two HH הה are the two sides of the sword. The Scabbard is the אדני ADNY name, Malchut<\/a>. The meditation on the unification of heaven and earth, upper and lower names, is the aspect of waving the sword that kills the negative forces around us.

\nThe 248 words רמח with the Vav ו, representing the six letters of the Shema. They spell ‘רומח’,’ spear’ that is another weapon against the ‘enemies’.
\nThe ‘Shield’ is the three angels, Michael<\/a>, Gabriel, and Nuriel. The initials of their names, מגן, literally mean ‘Shield.’ We receive this protection by the merits of the patriarchs representing Chessed<\/a>, Gevurah<\/a>, and Tiferet<\/a> for the Right, Left, and Central columns.
\nThe sling is another weapon we activate with the first five words of the Shema.
\n1 Samuel 17:40<\/a>
\n“וַיִּקַּח מַקְלוֹ בְּיָדוֹ וַיִּבְחַר לוֹ חֲמִשָּׁה חַלֻּקֵי אֲבָנִים מִן הַנַּחַל וַיָּשֶׂם אֹתָם בִּכְלִי הָרֹעִים אֲשֶׁר לוֹ וּבַיַּלְקוּט וְקַלְּעוֹ בְיָדוֹ וַיִּגַּשׁ אֶל הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי”
\n“He took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.”
\nThe five words are the aspect of the five Sefirot, Chessed<\/a> to Hod<\/a>. They become one in Yessod<\/a> and come out of the mouth, which is the aspect of Yessod<\/a>. They shoot out and kill the enemy.
\nThe Zohar reveals that the five stones that King David picked from the brook became one in his sling to create a joint force that could kill Goliath, the Philistine.
