60. אָמַר רַבִּי אַבָּא, אִם כָּךְ, כַּמָּה בְּנֵי אָדָם הָיוּ, אִם תֹּאמַר שֶׁכֻּלָּם הָלְכוּ עִמּוֹ? אָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, כֵּן, [וּמִשּׁוּם שֶׁכֻּלָּם ד”א וּמִשּׁוּם כָּךְ כֻּלָּם] הָאֲנָשִׁים שֶׁהָיוּ הוֹלְכִים עִמּוֹ, כֻּלָּם נִקְרְאוּ עַם אֱלֹהֵי אַבְרָהָם. וְהָיָה עוֹבֵר בָּאָרֶץ וְלֹא הָיָה פוֹחֵד, שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיַּעֲבֹר אַבְרָם בָּאָרֶץ.
\n61. אָמַר לוֹ רַבִּי אַבָּא, אִם הָיָה כָּתוּב וְהַנֶּפֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ בְחָרָן – הָיִיתִי אוֹמֵר כָּךְ. אֶלָּא כָתוּב וְאֶת הַנֶּפֶשׁ. אֶת – לְרַבּוֹת אֶת הַזְּכוּת שֶׁל כָּל הַנְּפָשׁוֹת שֶׁהָיוּ הוֹלְכוֹת עִמּוֹ. שֶׁכָּל מִי שֶׁמְּזַכֶּה אֶת הָאַחֵר, אוֹתָהּ הַזְּכוּת תְּלוּיָה בּוֹ וְלֹא זָזָה מִמֶּנּוּ. מִנַּיִן לָנוּ? שֶׁכָּתוּב וְאֶת הַנֶּפֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ בְחָרָן. הַזְּכוּת שֶׁל אוֹתָן הַנְּפָשׁוֹת הָיְתָה הוֹלֶכֶת עִם אַבְרָהָם.

\n“וַיַּעֲבֹר אַבְרָם, בָּאָרֶץ, עַד מְקוֹם שְׁכֶם, עַד אֵלוֹן מוֹרֶה; וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי, אָז בָּאָרֶץ”
\n“Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land.”
\nRabbi Aba says that many people converted by Abram and how can we say that all of them came with him. Rabbi Elazar said that this is true because the people were called ‘the people of Abram’s God’. Abram passed through the land without fear because many came with him.

\nRabbi Aba continues with his explanation and say that if the verse (12:5) was saying “and the souls which they had made in Haran” then it implies many, but the verse says “and also the souls…” which implies that it includes the merits of the souls that came with him. Abram passed through the land without fear because these merits walked with him.
\nThose who connect others to YHVH<\/a> and the Torah earn merits that stay with them forever.

\nRabbi Shimon explains why God first revealed himself to Abram with the command “Lech Lecha” “Go out for you…”. Before this point the Holy One Blessed be He didn’t speak to Abraham. The reason for that comes from the numerical value of the words “לֶךְ-לְךָ” “Lech Lecha” that is 100. It implies that Abram will have a son at the age of 100.
