48. וַיָּבֹא אַבְרָהָם לִסְפֹּד לְשָׂרָה וְלִבְכֹּתָהּ. הַיְנוּ [שֶׁכָּתוּב] שֶׁשָּׁנִינוּ, כָּל שִׁבְעַת הַיָּמִים נַפְשׁוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם פּוֹקֶדֶת לְגוּפוֹ וּמִתְאַבֶּלֶת עָלָיו. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב (איוב יד) אַךְ בְּשָׂרוֹ עָלָיו יִכְאָב וְנַפְשׁוֹ עָלָיו תֶּאֱבָל. כְּמוֹ זֶה, וַיָּבֹא אַבְרָהָם לִסְפֹּד לְשָׂרָה וְלִבְכֹּתָהּ. וַיָּבֹא אַבְרָהָם – זוֹ הִיא הַנְּשָׁמָה. לִסְפֹּד לְשָׂרָה – זֶה הַגּוּף.
\n49. אָמַר רַבִּי יִצְחָק, בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁהַנְּשָׁמָה זוֹכָה וְעוֹלָה לִמְקוֹם מַעֲלָתָהּ, הַגּוּף שׁוֹכֵב בְּשָׁלוֹם וְיָנוּחַ עַל מִשְׁכָּבוֹ. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב (ישעיה נז) יָבוֹא שָׁלוֹם יָנוּחוּ עַל מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָם הֹלֵךְ נְכֹחוֹ. מַה זֶּה הֹלֵךְ נְכֹחוֹ? אָמַר רַבִּי יִצְחק, הַנְּשָׁמָה הֹלֵךְ נְכֹחוֹ לִמְקוֹם הָעֵדֶן הַגָּנוּז לָהּ. מַה מַּשְׁמִיעַ? אָמַר רַבִּי יְהוּדָה, מִזֶּה נִשְׁמָע נְכֹחֹה כָּתוּב בְּהֵ”א. וּבְשָׁעָה שֶׁאֵינָהּ זוֹכָה, וְהִיא רְאוּיָה לְקַבֵּל עָנְשָׁהּ, הוֹלֶכֶת מְשׁוֹמֶמֶת וּמְבַקֶּרֶת בְּכָל יוֹם אֶת הַגּוּף וְאֶת הַקֶּבֶר.<\/div>\n

\n‘and Abraham went in’ (Genesis 23:2<\/a>) is the aspect of the soul and to ‘mourn for Sarah’ is the aspect of the body.
\nJob 14:22<\/a>
\n“אַךְ-בְּשָׂרוֹ, עָלָיו יִכְאָב; וְנַפְשׁוֹ, עָלָיו תֶּאֱבָל”
\n“But his body pains him, And his soul mourns on him””
\nWhen the soul leaves the body, for the next seven days it stays close to it and mourn its separation from the body.

\nIsaiah 57:2<\/a>
\n“יָבוֹא שָׁלוֹם, יָנוּחוּ עַל-מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָם; הֹלֵךְ, נְכֹחוֹ”
\n“He enters into peace; They rest in their beds, Each one who walked straightforward.”
\n‘walked straightforward’ means that the soul goes to its place in heaven.
\nThis verse from Job reveals that when a righteous dies he goes into state of peace, the body goes into rest and his soul goes to his place in heavens.
\nRabbi Yitzchak says that when the soul has merits, it goes up to its reserved level in heavens and the body lies down, resting in peace. When the soul has no merits, the ‘punishment’ process starts and the soul wonders, visiting its grave everyday, experiencing the pain of leaving this world without enough merits to move up.
