\n“וְגַם עֵרֶב רַב עָלָה אִתָּם וְצֹאן וּבָקָר מִקְנֶה כָּבֵד מְאֹד”
\n“A mixed multitude also went up with them, along with flocks and herds, a very large number of livestock.”
\nThey were called ‘Mixed Multitude’ and not by the name of their nation and language that was one.
\nThey were the magicians and witchcraft wizards of Egypt. They saw the miracles and wonders Moses did in Egypt and they followed him.
\nGod told Moses not to accept them but Moses insisted to support their desire to join the Israelites<\/a>. He believed that they will convert when they see the wonders of the Holy One Blessed be He every day and know that there’s only one God.

\nThe Zohar asks; why weren’t they call ‘mixed multitude’ and explains that they were all the magicians of Egypt. Their leaders were Yonus and Yombrus. The higher level magicians were always doing their magics when the sun was at the evening time, after six and half hours of the day. The small magicians, were doing their magic from nine and a half hours of the day until midnight.

\nThe high level magicians were waiting for the sun to come down. At that time 995 levels of negativity began to wonder around the land, These negative spiritual forces could connect with the magicians and do whatever they want and all Egyptians trusted them. The word for ‘Mixed’, ‘ערב’, pronounced ‘Erev’, also means ‘evening’ and it’s related to the times the negative forces were mixed. That is why it says that ‘A mixed multitude also went up with them’.
