67. שִׂבְרוֹ עַל ה’ אֱלֹהָיו. שִׂבְרוֹ, וְלֹא אָמַר תִּקְוָתוֹ וְלֹא בִטְחוֹנוֹ, אֶלָּא שִׂבְרוֹ. אַל תִּקְרֵי שִׂבְרוֹ אֶלָּא שִׁבְרוֹ, שֶׁנּוֹחַ לַצַּדִּיקִים לִשְׁבֹּר אֶת עַצְמָם וּלְהִשָּׁבֵר שֶׁבֶר עַל שֶׁבֶר, וְהַכֹּל עַל ה’ אֱלֹהָיו, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (תהלים מד) כִּי עָלֶיךָ הֹרַגְנוּ כָל הַיּוֹם. כִּי עָלֶיךָ נָשָׂאנוּ חֶרְפָּה.

\nThe word ‘שִׂבְרוֹ’ (#66) not accurately translated to English as ‘Hope’. It has the root ‘שבר’ that means ‘break’. The righteous have complete trust in YHVH<\/a> and they are ready to break their desires for closer connection to his Light.
\nPsalms 44:23<\/a>
\n“כִּי עָלֶיךָ הֹרַגְנוּ כָל הַיּוֹם נֶחְשַׁבְנוּ כְּצֹאן טִבְחָה.”
\n“But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
\n‘Killed’ is one-time event but the verse says ‘Killed all day long’ to brings the aspect of constant breaking\/killing of the desires for the self. We are tempted all day long by the negative-side. We are pushed to actions that cause us to lose the connection to God. The righteous follow God like sheep following their shepherd. They are ready to give ‘slaughtered’ and return to YHVH<\/a>.

\nGenesis 42:1<\/a>
\n“וַיַּרְא יַעֲקֹב כִּי יֶשׁ שֶׁבֶר בְּמִצְרָיִם וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב לְבָנָיו לָמָּה תִּתְרָאוּ”
\n“Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?””
\nThe English translation of the word שֶׁבֶר is given here as ‘grain’, to explain to the reader that Jacob saw that there’s food in Egypt. We explained before that the root word ‘שבר’ is mainly ‘break’. The righteous people ‘break’ their desires, which is their vessels in order to receive the Light. Breaking of the vessel is aspect of purification (Leviticus 11:33<\/a>). Joseph<\/a> revealed the light of sustenance for the entire world. As a righteous person, Jacob could see the ‘break’, which is light that was revealed in Egypt.
\nEven though Jacob was mourning the loss of Joseph<\/a> and lost the holy spirit, teh Shechina connection, he could see the Light that Joseph<\/a> revealed in Egypt.
