80. פָּתַח רַבִּי יְהוּדָה וְאָמַר, סַמְּכוּנִי בָּאֲשִׁישׁוֹת רַפְּדוּנִי בַּתַּפּוּחִים וְגוֹ’. הַפָּסוּק הַזֶּה הֲרֵי נִתְבָּאֵר, וְיָפֶה. אֲבָל כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל אָמְרָה אֶת זֶה בַּגָּלוּת. סַמְּכוּנִי, מַה זֶּה סַמְּכוּנִי? אֶלָּא מִי שֶׁנּוֹפֵל צָרִיךְ לִסְמֹךְ אוֹתוֹ, זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב (תהלים קמה) סוֹמֵךְ ה’ לְכָל הַנּוֹפְלִים וְגוֹ’. וּמִשּׁוּם כָּךְ, כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁנָּפְלָה, שֶׁכָּתוּב (עמוס ה) נָפְלָה לֹא תוֹסִיף קוּם, צְרִיכָה לִסְמִיכָה, וְהִיא אוֹמֶרֶת סַמְּכוּנִי. לְמִי הִיא אוֹמֶרֶת? לְיִשְׂרָאֵל בָּנֶיהָ, שֶׁהֵם עִמָּהּ בַּגָּלוּת.

\n“Sustain me with raisin cakes, comfort me with apples, Because I am lovesick.”
\nThe Malchut<\/a>\/Shechina asking her children, the Israelites<\/a>, to support her. When in exile that is the aspect of falling, the Shechina needs the spiritual sustenance and support. God promised to support all who are fallen.
\nPsalms 145:14<\/a>
\n“סוֹמֵךְ יְהוָה לְכָל הַנֹּפְלִים וְזוֹקֵף לְכָל הַכְּפוּפִים”
\n“YHVH<\/a> sustains all who fall And raises up all who are fallen down.”

\nThe Hebrew word ‘אֲשִׁישׁוֹת’ (Pronounced ‘Ashishot’) incorrectly translated in English as ‘raisin cakes’. Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra<\/a> in his commentary to Song of Songs 2:5<\/a> explains this word as a glass vessel for wine.
\nThe Zohar explains that ‘Ashishot’ is the aspect of the patriarchs (three columns<\/a>) that are filled with the ‘wine’ of the Torah that is the Light of Chokmah<\/a>, coming from Binah<\/a>. This light continues to Chessed<\/a>, Gevurah<\/a> and Tiferet<\/a> that is the patriarchs and from them to Malchut<\/a> with all the blessings that come from the upper light.
\nThis is the support that the Shechina asks up to give her. Our studies of the ‘wine’ of the Torah from the Zohar give the support needed to continue the Light to the world, sustaining the Shechina until the coming of Mashiach that will establish a continuous channel of Light to Malchut<\/a>.
