63. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיָּשֻׁבוּ מִתּוּר הָאָרֶץ. וַיָּשֻׁבוּ, שָׁבִים לְצַד הָרָע וְשָׁבִים מִדֶּרֶךְ הָאֱמֶת. אוֹמְרִים, מָה אִכְפַּת לָנוּ? עַד הַיּוֹם לֹא רָאִינוּ טוֹב לָעוֹלָם. עָמַלְנוּ בָהּ, הַבַּיִת רֵיק, יָשַׁבְנוּ בְקָלוֹן בָּעָם, וּלְאוֹתוֹ עוֹלָם מִי יִזְכֶּה וּמִי יִכָּנֵס לְתוֹכוֹ? טוֹב לָנוּ שֶׁלֹּא טָרַחְנוּ כָּל זֶה. וַיְסַפְּרוּ לוֹ וַיֹּאמְרוּ וְגוֹ’, הֲרֵי עָמַלְנוּ וְעָיַפְנוּ בִּשְׁבִיל לָדַעַת חֵלֶק אוֹתוֹ עוֹלָם. וְגַם זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבַשׁ הִיא, טוֹב הוּא אוֹתוֹ עוֹלָם עֶלְיוֹן, כְּמוֹ שֶׁיָּדַעְנוּ בַתּוֹרָה, אֲבָל מִי יָכוֹל לִזְכּוֹת בּוֹ?
\n64. אֶפֶס כִּי עַז הָעָם, תַּקִּיף הוּא, שֶׁלֹּא יַחֲשִׁיב כָּל הָעוֹלָם כְּלָל, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לוֹ עֹשֶׁר רַב לְהִשְׁתַּדֵּל בּוֹ, מִי הוּא שֶׁיִּזְכֶּה בָּהּ? וַדַּאי אֶפֶס כִּי עַז הָעָם הַיֹּשֵׁב בָּאָרֶץ. מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לִזְכּוֹת בָּהּ, צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת חָזָק בְּעֹשֶׁר, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (משלי יח) וְעָשִׁיר יַעֲנֶה עַזּוֹת. וְהֶעָרִים גְּדֹלֹת בְּצֻרוֹת, בָּתִּים מְלֵאִים כָּל טוֹב שֶׁלֹּא יֶחֶסְרוּ מֵהַכֹּל. וְעִם כָּל זֶה, וְגַם יְלִדֵי הָעֲנָק רָאִינוּ שָׁם, צָרִיךְ גּוּף חָזָק, גִּבּוֹר כַּאֲרִי. \nNumbers 13:25<\/a>
\n“וַיָּשֻׁבוּ, מִתּוּר הָאָרֶץ, מִקֵּץ, אַרְבָּעִים יוֹם.”
\n“And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.”
\nThey returned from spying the Land, meaning that they left the path of truth. The spies came back with doubts about the future rewards that come from the efforts of following the Torah.
\nNumbers 13:27<\/a>
\n“וַיְסַפְּרוּ-לוֹ, וַיֹּאמְרוּ, בָּאנוּ, אֶל-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר שְׁלַחְתָּנוּ; וְגַם זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבַשׁ, הִוא–וְזֶה-פִּרְיָהּ”
\n“And they told him, and said: ‘We came unto the land that you sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.”
\nThe Zohar reveals that the spies did see the value of the ‘Land’ when they said ‘surely it flows with milk and honey’ but their consciousness was limited, thinking that they can’t reach that level.

\n“אֶפֶס כִּי-עַז הָעָם, הַיֹּשֵׁב בָּאָרֶץ; וְהֶעָרִים, בְּצֻרוֹת גְּדֹלֹת מְאֹד, וְגַם-יְלִדֵי הָעֲנָק, רָאִינוּ שָׁם”
\n“However the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.”
\nThe people on the Land were strong and fierce. The spies assumed that dwelling in the Land, which is the reward of the Torah, is not for everyone. The people that can achieve it should be rich and with special strengths like the current dwellers of the Land they just saw.
\n‘and the cities are fortified, and very great’, and ‘the children of Anak there’, The words they used to describe what they saw, revealed their fears and weaknesses. The children of Anak were giants and the spies saw themselves in comparison with Anak as ‘grasshoppers’ (verse 13:33<\/a>). The Torah requires physical strength in order to follow the restrictions of the precepts and the spies didn’t think that ‘small’ as they were, they wouldn’t be able to follow it.
