79. כָּתוּב, (ישעיה כא) אָמַר שֹׁמֵר אָתָא בֹקֶר וְגַם לָיְלָה אִם תִּבְעָיוּן בְּעָיוּ שֻׁבוּ אֵתָיוּ. פָּסוּק זֶה פֵּרְשׁוּהוּ עַל גָּלוּת יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁיּוֹשְׁבִים בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי שֵׂעִיר, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל אוֹמְרִים לַקָּדוֹשׁ-בָּרוּךְ-הוּא: שֹׁמֵר מַה מִלַּיְלָה – מַה יִּהְיֶה עָלֵינוּ מֵהַגָּלוּת הַזּוֹ שֶׁדּוֹמָה לְחֶשְׁכַת הַלַּיְלָה?. מַה כָּתוּב? אָמַר שֹׁמֵר. זֶה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא. אָתָא בֹקֶר – כְּבָר הֶאַרְתִּי לְךָ בְּגָלוּת מִצְרַיִם, וְהֶעֱלֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם וְקֵרַבְתִּיכֶם לַעֲבוֹדָתִי, וְנָתַתִּי לָכֶם תּוֹרָה כְּדֵי שֶׁתִּזְכּוּ לְחַיֵּי עוֹלָם. עֲזַבְתֶּם תּוֹרָתִי, וְגַם לָיְלָה – הִכְנַסְתִּיכֶם לְגָלוּת (בָּבֶל וְהֶעֱלֵיתִיכֶם. עֲזַבְתֶּם תּוֹרָתִי כְּמִקֹּדֶם, וְהִכְנַסְתִּי אֶתְכֶם לְגָלוּת) כְּמִקֹּדֶם. אִם תִּבְעָיוּן בְּעָיוּ – כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שם לד) דִּרְשׁוּ מֵעַל סֵפֶר ה’ וּקְרָאוּ, וְשָׁם תִּמְצְאוּ בַּמֶּה תְּלוּיָה גָּלוּתְכֶם וּגְאֻלַּתְכֶם. וּכְשֶׁתִּבְעָיוּן בָּהּ, הִיא תֹּאמַר וְתַכְרִיז לִפְנֵיכֶם: שֻׁבוּ אֵתָיוּ. שׁוּבוּ בִּתְשׁוּבָה שְׁלֵמָה, וּמִיָּד אֵתָיוּ, וְקִרְבוּ אֵלַי. \n“מַשָּׂא דּוּמָה אֵלַי קֹרֵא מִשֵּׂעִיר שֹׁמֵר מַה מִלַּיְלָה שֹׁמֵר מַה מִלֵּיל”
\n“The oracle concerning
\nEdom. One keeps calling to me from Seir, “Watchman, how far gone is the
\nnight? Watchman, how far gone is the night?”
\nThis verse is related to the time of exile when the
\nIsraelites<\/a> were tired from the darkness of the exile ask the Holy One Blessed
\nbe He, “Watchman, how far
\ngone is the night? Watchman, how far gone is the night?”.
\nIsaiah 21:12<\/a>
\n“אָמַר שֹׁמֵר אָתָה בֹקֶר וְגַם לָיְלָה אִם תִּבְעָיוּן בְּעָיוּ שֻׁבוּ אֵתָיוּ”
\n“The watchman says,
\n“Morning comes but also night. If you would inquire, inquire; Come back
\nagain.”
\nGod answers and reminds them that he took them from
\nthe ‘night\/darkness’ of Egypt and brought them to the ‘morning\/Light’ that is
\nthe aspect of Torah and the laws that bring them closer to him. The Torah earns
\nthem merits to immortality but they didn’t value it. Then they left the path
\nof Torah and exiled to Babylon and again they left the Torah and went into a
\nlonger period of exile. The prophet
\nIsaiah delivers God’s suggestion;
\nIsaiah 34:16<\/a>
\n“דִּרְשׁוּ מֵעַל סֵפֶר יְהוָה וּקְרָאוּ אַחַת מֵהֵנָּה לֹא נֶעְדָּרָה אִשָּׁה רְעוּתָהּ לֹא פָקָדוּ כִּי פִי הוּא צִוָּה וְרוּחוֹ הוּא קִבְּצָן”
\n“Seek from the book of YHVH<\/a> (Torah),
\nand read: Not one of these will be missing; None will lack its mate. For His mouth
\nhas commanded, And His Spirit has gathered them.”
\nThe answers we are looking for are in the Torah. The exile would end when we make Teshuva<\/a> and return to the path of Torah and follow the spiritual laws that we learn from it. Only then we come closer to YHVH<\/a> and benefit from the blessings of the Torah.
\nLesson;
\nThis study is like a mirror of our lives. When we enjoy the gift of a good life, we quickly lose appreciation and shortly after, the ‘good’ leaves us. When we realize our mistakes, we make corrections to earn the back to the good. Then again, we lose the path and fall. We fight harder to go back and continue the cycle of good and bad. Only when we study and follow the ways of the spiritual system and laws of the Torah we come closer to YHVH<\/a> and have a tiny taste of immortality.
\nThe Zohar is our Torah teacher. It helps us understand the secrets behind the stories and the sacred text. This form of study brings us closer to YHVH<\/a> because it’s on a higher spiritual level than studying the meaning of the simple stories.
\nExile is the aspect of distance from YHVH<\/a>. When we achieve complete and unshaken faith<\/a> and certainty in YHVH<\/a>, we go out of our personal exile. That feeling of freedom and being aware of God’s presence in our lives is the aspect of immortality. Even if we know that our lives in this world end one day, our souls know and accept the promise of the Final Redemption and the Resurrection to immortality. That promise is found in Isaiah 25:8<\/a> ‘He will swallow up death forever!’.
