69. וַיָּבֹאוּ עַד נַחַל אֶשְׁכּוֹל וְגוֹ’. רַבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר, כָּרְתוּ אוֹתוֹ אֶשְׁכּוֹל, בָּאוּ לַהֲרִימוֹ, לֹא יָכְלוּ. בָּאוּ לְקַחְתּוֹ, לֹא יָכְלוּ. בָּאוּ כָלֵב וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ וּלְקָחוּהוּ וְהֶעֱלוּהוּ, וְעָלָה עַל יָדָם. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּ בַמּוֹט בִּשְׁנָיִם. בִּשְׁנָיִם, בְּאוֹתָם שְׁנַיִם יְחִידִים. זְמוֹרָה מָה רָצוּ? אֶלָּא אֶשְׁכּוֹל הָיָה תָלוּי בָּהּ, וּבְעוֹד שֶׁהָיָה מְחֻבָּר בִּמְקוֹמוֹ, נִקְרָא זְמוֹרָה. אַחַר כָּךְ קְרָאוֹ מוֹט, שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּ בַמּוֹט, אוֹתוֹ הַנּוֹדָע, אוֹתוֹ שֶׁכָּרְתוּ.

\nNumbers 13:23<\/a>
\n“וַיָּבֹאוּ עַד נַחַל אֶשְׁכֹּל וַיִּכְרְתוּ מִשָּׁם זְמוֹרָה וְאֶשְׁכּוֹל עֲנָבִים אֶחָד וַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּ בַמּוֹט בִּשְׁנָיִם וּמִן הָרִמֹּנִים וּמִן הַתְּאֵנִים.”
\n“Then they came to the valley of Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and figs.”
\nRabbi Aba reveals that ‘carried it on a pole between two men’ is refer to Joshua and Caleb. When the others tried to lift up the grape cluster, they couldn’t move it because it was heavy. Only when Joshua and Caleb came to the grape cluster ‘cooperated’ with them by standing up and let them carry it. The two had pure consciousness, not like the other ten that sin with an evil speech about the land.

\nJoshua and Caleb understood that having the ability to carry from the fruits of the Land, means that they have merits to enter the Promised Land. The other spies were jealous of the two and planned to kill them. Caleb talk to the grapes and ask it; what’s the purpose if we die because of you? Immediately, the cluster made itself light, and they let the others carry it.

\nRabbi Elazar said that because the verse says ‘two men carried it’, it means that only Joshua and Caleb had the individual merits to carry it. Only when they came back to the camps of the Israelites<\/a>, they gave the fruit to the others. It is found in the following verse when the spies say; ‘and this is its fruit’.
\nNumbers 13:27<\/a>
\n“וַיְסַפְּרוּ-לוֹ, וַיֹּאמְרוּ, בָּאנוּ, אֶל-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר שְׁלַחְתָּנוּ; וְגַם זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבַשׁ, הִוא–וְזֶה-פִּרְיָהּ”
\n“Thus they told him, and said, “We went into the land where you sent us, and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.”
\nFrom this situation, Joshua learned that for a successful mission, he needs to send only two spies to the city of Jericho.
\nJoshua 2:1<\/a>
\n“וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוֹשֻׁעַ-בִּן-נוּן מִן-הַשִּׁטִּים שְׁנַיִם-אֲנָשִׁים מְרַגְּלִים, חֶרֶשׁ לֵאמֹר, לְכוּ רְאוּ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, וְאֶת-יְרִיחוֹ”
\n“Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from Shittim, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.””

\nThe Holy Land is the aspect of the Light of the Torah. Everyone wants to benefit from it but forget that there are some requirements to be able to ‘carry its fruits’.
\nWe need to ‘tour’ the land that is the aspect of learning it and find the good in everything we see in the Torah. Even if sometimes it’s difficult to understand and follow the laws of the Torah, we should keep moving forward with faith<\/a> and certainty that the connection to the Torah is the connection to our ‘Promised Land’ and it will take us there. Sooner or later, it will lead us to the great Light.
\nSome people wish to connect to the study of Torah and Zohar for the ‘benefits’, considering it as a tool for selfish desires like the ten spies wanted to carry the fruit but couldn’t. It was heavy for them because they were connected to the ‘material’ aspect of their lives. Desires for the self alone and lack of certainty is heavy. Only when we connect purely to the study of Torah, everything in life is ‘Lighter,’ and we can carry everything with ease.
\nPeople ask me for what Zohar to read to ‘remedy’ a specific issue in their lives. Even though the Zohar reveals light for all aspects of our lives, we can not use it as a prescription drug.
\nJoshua and Caleb were ready before coming to pick the fruit of the Land. They didn’t need a specific tool to carry the heavy load. It was automatic. The ‘fruit’(Light) by itself saw that they have the merits\/Light in them and stood up for them to carry it.
\nFor those who wish to have a ‘Light’ life, I suggest continuous studies of Torah and Zohar to have the ‘shoulders’ to carry anything that comes on your path.
\nAnother important lesson is to know that the day that the ten spies gave the evil speech on the Holy Land was the ninth of Av. They created such negativity that broke the connection of the Israelites<\/a> to the ‘Holy’ of the Land. For that reason, the negative even created a cosmic ‘hole’ that attracts negativity every year on the ninth of Av.
\nThe two holy temples were destroyed by two different evil forces on the same day hundreds of years apart. It’s statistically impossible to have the same adverse event on the same day of the year. The negative opening we create would come back to us because it becomes part of our lives. Do good and avoid bad so every day would be positive and ‘fruitful’.
