85. שָׁנִינוּ, אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי, בְּאוֹתוֹ מַמָּשׁ שֶׁנִּמְצָא דִּין לְמִצְרַיִם, בְּאוֹתוֹ מַמָּשׁ נִמְצָא דִּין לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וְרָאִיתִי אֶת הַדָּם וּפָסַחְתִּי עֲלֵיכֶם. וְכֵן שָׁנִינוּ, בְּכָל אוֹתָם כְּתָרִים קְדוֹשִׁים שֶׁלְּמַעְלָה – כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִּמְצָא דִּין, נִמְצָאִים רַחֲמִים, וְהַכֹּל בְּשָׁעָה אַחַת. שָׁנָה רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה, כָּתוּב (שם יט) וְנָגַף ה’ אֶת מִצְרַיִם נָגֹף וְרָפוֹא. נָגֹף לְמִצְרַיִם, וְרָפוֹא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל. מַה זֶּה וְרָפוֹא? מִמַּה שֶּׁנִּמּוֹלוּ צְרִיכִים רְפוּאָה.

Zohar Bo <\/strong><\/p>\n

Exodus 12:13<\/a>
\n“וְהָיָה הַדָּם לָכֶם לְאֹת עַל הַבָּתִּים אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם שָׁם וְרָאִיתִי אֶת הַדָּם וּפָסַחְתִּי עֲלֵכֶם וְלֹא יִהְיֶה בָכֶם נֶגֶף לְמַשְׁחִית בְּהַכֹּתִי בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם.”
\n “The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”<\/p>\n

Rabbi Yossi says that when the judgment came to Egypt, at the same time, mercy came to the Israelites<\/a> as it says above “when I see the blood I will pass over you”.
\nOn all the upper levels, mercy is always found next to judgment. <\/p>\n

Isaiah 19:22<\/a>
\n“וְנָגַף יְהוָה אֶת מִצְרַיִם נָגֹף וְרָפוֹא וְשָׁבוּ עַד יְהוָה וְנֶעְתַּר לָהֶם וּרְפָאָם.”
\n“YHVH<\/a> will strike Egypt, striking and healing; so they will return to YHVH<\/a>, and He will respond to them and will heal them.”
\nRabbi Chizkiya says when it says ‘striking and healing’ it means striking the Egyptians and healing the Israelites<\/a>. The healing came to them because they were circumcised and needed healing. <\/p>\n

\nExodus 12:23<\/a>
\n“וְעָבַר יְהוָה לִנְגֹּף אֶת מִצְרַיִם וְרָאָה אֶת הַדָּם עַל הַמַּשְׁקוֹף וְעַל שְׁתֵּי הַמְּזוּזֹת וּפָסַח יְהוָה עַל הַפֶּתַח וְלֹא יִתֵּן הַמַּשְׁחִית לָבֹא אֶל בָּתֵּיכֶם לִנְגֹּף.”
\n“For YHVH<\/a> will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, YHVH<\/a> will pass over the door (opening) and will not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to smite you.”<\/p>\n

The Israelites<\/a> circumcised themselves before the last plague of the killing of the firstborn. When God passed through all the houses in Egypt, he killed the firstborn of the Egyptians and healed the Israelites<\/a> from the pain of the circumcision<\/a>.
\nThe translation says that God ‘pass over the door’. The word that is used here is ‘פתח’ that means opening, not ‘door’ that is ‘דלת’ in Hebrew.
\nRabbi Yossi explains that we would expect to read ‘pass over you’ to tell that God will skip the Israelites<\/a> but the use of the word ‘opening’ implies something else. The ‘opening’ is the opening in the body that is the circumcision<\/a> that God healed at that time. <\/p>\n

\nRabbi Shimon says that at midnight, the supernal<\/a> Chessed<\/a> that is Zeir Anpin<\/a> is awakened to be with Malchut<\/a>. The night is the aspect of Malchut<\/a> that is judgment and Zeir Anpin<\/a> is Chassadim<\/a>. They are always together, Malchut<\/a> inflicts judgment and Zeir Anpin<\/a> heals at the same time.<\/p>\n

Lesson;
\nThe Torah didn’t mention that the Israelites<\/a> were not circumcised at that time, even though the command was there from the covenant with Abraham. Genesis 17:10<\/a> “every male among you shall be circumcised”<\/p>\n

Exodus 12:48<\/a>
\n“וְכִי יָגוּר אִתְּךָ גֵּר וְעָשָׂה פֶסַח לַיהוָה הִמּוֹל לוֹ כָל זָכָר וְאָז יִקְרַב לַעֲשֹׂתוֹ וְהָיָה כְּאֶזְרַח הָאָרֶץ וְכָל עָרֵל לֹא יֹאכַל בּוֹ.”
\n“But if a stranger sojourns with you, and celebrates the Passover to, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near to celebrate it; and he shall be like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat of it.”<\/p>\n

This command doesn’t tell the Israelite directly to get circumcized but implies that only a circumcised male can take a ram, slaughter it, and put its blood on the doorposts for protection from death. (Read Exodus 1<\/a>2) <\/p>\n

The sages explain that the Torah didn’t want to shame the Israelites<\/a> that were mostly idol worshippers in Egypt and didn’t do circumcision<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The circumcision<\/a> removes the foreskin that represents the first sin, caused by the Snake<\/a>. He created a disconnection between Adam and God. When we remove the foreskin, we reveal the pure connection of Yessod<\/a> to Malchut<\/a>. Yessod<\/a> is the funnel that brings life and sustenance to Malchut<\/a>. The Israelites<\/a> made themselves worthy of redemption from slavery in Egypt by going through the pain of the circumcision<\/a>. <\/p>\n

When we experience some kind of pain, it would be better to consider it and an opening for something greater. Accepting the pain and follow the Torah would bring us the Light that would heal us.<\/p>\n
