100. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אָמַר, בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁנִּכְנַס אַבְרָהָם לַמְּעָרָה, אֵיךְ נִכְנַס? מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהָיָה רָץ אַחַר אוֹתוֹ הָעֵגֶל, שֶׁכָּתוּב וְאֶל הַבָּקָר רָץ אַבְרָהָם וְגוֹ’, וְאוֹתוֹ בֶּן בָּקָר בָּרַח עַד אוֹתָהּ הַמְּעָרָה, וְנִכְנַס אַחֲרָיו, וְרָאָה מַה שֶּׁרָאָה.

Zohar Chayei Sarah<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nRabbi Elazar asked how Abraham got to discover the cave. He quotes the verse (Genesis 18:7<\/a>)
\n“וְאֶל הַבָּקָר רָץ אַבְרָהָם וַיִּקַּח בֶּן בָּקָר רַךְ וָטוֹב וַיִּתֵּן אֶל הַנַּעַר וַיְמַהֵר לַעֲשׂוֹת אֹתוֹ.”
\n“And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it.”<\/p>\n

and explain that the calf escaped and he chased him into the cave where Abraham saw what he saw.<\/p>\n

\nAnother reason is that Abraham was praying every day, and was walking to the field next to the Cave where he smelled heavenly aroma. He saw a light coming out of the Cave and went inside to pray. He had words with the Holy One blessed be He. For that reason, his desire was to always be in that place. <\/p>\n

\nIf Abraham loved the Cave, why didn’t he buy it before? The Zohar explains that Abraham didn’t let them know that he desired the Cave and found its importance. If they saw him go after the Cave, they may increase the price or even refuse to sell it to him. Now that he had a reason to bury Sarah, he approached them to purchase a burial place, and in the end, he bought the Cave.<\/p>\n

\nIf Ephron saw what Abraham saw in the Cave, he would never sell it. But Ephron could not see anything in the Cave because only the one that would own the place can see its real essence. The Cave was intended for Abraham and that is why he could see its value. Ephron could only see darkness in the Cave. That is why he sold it to Abraham.<\/p>\n

Lesson;
\nAbraham was spiritually elevated and could see the Light behind the physical darkness in the Cave. As students of the Zohar that elevates us spiritually, we can see better than many other ‘grounded’ people. As we dedicate more time to study and pray, we ascend to higher levels and able to see beyond the physical realm that is darkness.
\nThe Zohar commentary that I study from and share with you is called ‘Zohar Hasulam’. ‘Hasulam’ means ‘the Ladder’. Rabbi Ashlag of blessed memory gave his commentary the title “The Ladder” because as explained, with each study we climb higher. <\/p>\n
