110. אָדָם נִכְנַס לִמְקוֹמוֹ – חַוָּה לֹא נִכְנְסָה, עַד שֶׁקָּרַב אַבְרָהָם וְהִכְנִיס אוֹתָהּ אֵצֶל אָדָם וְקִבֵּל אוֹתָהּ בִּשְׁבִילוֹ. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן קָבַר אַבְרָהָם אֶת שָׂרָה אִשְׁתּוֹ, וְלֹא כָתוּב לְשָׂרָה, אֶלָּא אֶת שָׂרָה, לְרַבּוֹת חַוָּה. וְאָז הִתְיַשְּׁבוּ בִּמְקוֹמָם כָּרָאוּי. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב (בראשית ב) אֵלֶּה תוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם, וְשָׁנִינוּ בְּאַבְרָהָם. תּוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ – זֶה אָדָם וְחַוָּה. לֹא כָתוּב אֵלֶּה הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ, אֶלָּא תוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם הָאָרֶץ, וְלֹא תוֹלְדוֹת בֶּן אָדָם. וְהֵם הִתְקַיְּמוּ בִּשְׁבִיל אַבְרָהָם. וּמִנַּיִן לָנוּ שֶׁהִתְקַיְּמוּ בִּשְׁבִיל אַבְרָהָם? שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיָּקָם הַשָּׂדֶה וְהַמְּעָרָה אֲשֶׁר בּוֹ לְאַבְרָהָם. וְעַד שֶׁבָּא אַבְרָהָם לֹא הִתְקַיְּמוּ אָדָם וְחַוָּה בִּמְקוֹמָם בְּאוֹתוֹ הָעוֹלָם.<\/p>\n

111. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר שָׁאַל אֶת רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָבִיו. אָמַר, הַמְּעָרָה הַזּוֹ אֵינָהּ כְּפוּלָה, שֶׁהֲרֵי כָּתוּב מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה, וְאַחַר כָּךְ הַכָּתוּב קָרָא לָהּ מְעָרַת שְׂדֵה הַמַּכְפֵּלָה. מַכְפֵּלָה הוּא קָרָא לַשָּׂדֶה.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nAdam went back to his place, but Eve stayed behind because she caused Adam to sin, as it is written;
\nGenesis 3:12<\/a>
\n“וַיֹּאמֶר הָאָדָם הָאִשָּׁה אֲשֶׁר נָתַתָּה עִמָּדִי הִוא נָתְנָה לִּי מִן הָעֵץ וָאֹכֵל.”
\n“Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”
\nEve was afraid that Adam wouldn’t accept her but Abraham came to her and brought her to Adam who accepted her because of Abraham. That is why it is written (Genesis 23:19<\/a>) “And after this, Abraham buried Sarah,”
\nAfter Abraham settled Adam and Eve in their place, he buried Sarah next to Eve. (See Shelah Lecha #134-136).
\nGenesis 2:4<\/a> “אֵלֶּה תוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם” “This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created”
\nThe word “בְּהִבָּרְאָם” “when they were created” has the letters “באברהם” “with Abraham”. Adam has the aspect of the heavens and Eve has the aspect of the earth because they were created by God, and not by man and woman as the rest of humanity that came after them.
\nThis verse tells that the heavens and the earth were created for the sake of Abraham. Only after Abraham came into the cave, Adam and Eve settled in their place properly.
\nWe learn that the Adam and Eve received their elevation from Abraham from the verse “So the field and the cave that is in it raised (וַיָּקָם) unto Abraham” (Genesis 23:20<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nRabbi Elazar asked his father, this cave was called first “מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה” ‘cave of Machpelah’ (Genesis 23:8<\/a>), then we read “the cave of the field of Machpelah” (Genesis 23:19<\/a>), so the field is the Machpelah, not the cave. <\/p>\n
