112. אָמַר לוֹ, כָּךְ קוֹרֵא לָהּ – מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר וְיִתֶּן לִי אֶת מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה, אֲבָל וַדַּאי, חַיֶּיךָ, הַמְּעָרָה הִיא מַכְפֵּלָה, וְלֹא הַשָּׂדֶה נִקְרָא מַכְפֵּלָה. אֶלָּא הַשָּׂדֶה וְהַמְּעָרָה נִקְרָאִים עַל שֵׁם מַכְפֵּלָה, שְׂדֵה הַמַּכְפֵּלָה וַדַּאי, וְלֹא הַמְּעָרָה, שֶׁהֲרֵי הַמְּעָרָה הִיא בַּשָּׂדֶה, וְאוֹתוֹ הַשָּׂדֶה עוֹמֵד בְּדָבָר אַחֵר.

\nThe word ‘מכפלה’ ‘Machpelah’ comes from the root word ‘כפל’ that means double. <\/p>\n

\nRabbi Shimon replied to his son, saying; indeed it is called the Cave of the Machpelah as it is written in Genesis 23:9<\/a>
\n“וְיִתֶּן לִי אֶת מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה אֲשֶׁר לוֹ אֲשֶׁר בִּקְצֵה שָׂדֵהוּ בְּכֶסֶף מָלֵא יִתְּנֶנָּה לִי בְּתוֹכְכֶם לַאֲחֻזַּת קָבֶר.”
\n“that he may give me the Cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you.”
\nBut he says that neither the Cave nor the field alone is called Machpelah, only when they are together. The field has the name Machpelah, and the Cave is part of the field. The field has another aspect that we will discuss here.<\/p>\n

\nThe whole Land of Israel<\/a> is folded under Jerusalem<\/a>, which is the secret of Malchut<\/a>, and it exists above and below. Jerusalem<\/a> above is Binah<\/a>, and Jerusalem<\/a> below is Malchut<\/a>. Jerusalem<\/a> above is held by the upper and lower sides. The same with Jerusalem<\/a> below that holds to its upper and lower sides. Because of that, Jerusalem<\/a> is ‘כפולה’ ‘double’ and with the secret of combining and sweetening judgment with mercy. This state brought about four aspects, Binah<\/a> and Malchut<\/a> in Binah<\/a> and Binah<\/a> and Malchut<\/a> in Malchut<\/a>. Malchut<\/a> is ‘double’ because there is Malchut<\/a> in Binah<\/a> and Malchut<\/a> in Malchut<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nSo that field is from the ‘מכפלה’ ‘Machpelah,’ which is Malchut<\/a> that connects above and below as explained previously.
\nAdam was buried in the Cave that had the aspect of Malchut<\/a> in Malchut<\/a>. He was put lower because, after the sin, he was punished by God.
\nGenesis 3:19<\/a>
\n“בְּזֵעַת אַפֶּיךָ תֹּאכַל לֶחֶם עַד שׁוּבְךָ אֶל הָאֲדָמָה כִּי מִמֶּנָּה לֻקָּחְתָּ כִּי עָפָר אַתָּה וְאֶל עָפָר תָּשׁוּב.”
\n“In the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust, you shall return.”
\nAfter Adam did repentance<\/a>, the Cave became part of the field that is the aspect of Malchut<\/a> in Binah<\/a> that is sweetened with mercy.<\/p>\n
