It is written &ldquo;as an adversary against him&rdquo; to mean against Balaam. For others, the angel was still an angel of Mercy. <\/p>\n<p>#410<br>\nRabbi Shimon said we learned that Balaam was wiser than all the people of the world in his sorcery because he looked to find advice on how to get out of the control of God&rsquo;s will. He wanted to disobey God&rsquo;s command; &ldquo;go with them; but only the word which I speak to you&mdash;that you shall do&rdquo; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Numbers.22.20?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\">Numbers 22:20<\/a>).<br>\nWith his sorceries, he found nothing other than his female donkey, by which he got out of God&rsquo;s power. It is written; &ldquo;So Balaam arose in the morning, and saddled his donkey&rdquo; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Numbers.22.21?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\">Numbers 22:21<\/a>).
