This reveals a profound truth found in Kabbalistic wisdom: that blessing and divine light can only be fully drawn down into this world through the proper union of masculine and feminine.
In the language of Kabbalah, the male represents the Light (אור)—the giving force, while the female represents the Vessel (כלי)—the receiving and manifesting force. Just as a lamp cannot shine without a vessel to hold the oil and a wick to receive the flame, so too the flow of divine energy requires both a source (masculine) and a container (feminine). This duality is not just physical—it exists within every spiritual system and within each individual. Zachar and Nekevah (masculine and feminine), when united in holiness and harmony, form a channel that draws abundance from the upper worlds into this world.
This is why the Zohar emphasizes that blessing only dwells where there is completeness, and completeness is found in the union of opposites, in the sacred connection between giving and receiving. When a man and woman come together with intention, love, and spiritual awareness, they mirror the supernal union of the Holy One, Blessed be He and the Shechinah. Through this alignment, they draw light not only into their own lives but into the entire world, fulfilling the divine purpose embedded in creation from the very beginning.
This foundational idea helps us understand that all acts of creation—whether in relationships, family, or spiritual pursuits—require both the energy of Light and the preparedness of the Vessel to receive and manifest divine blessing.
The foundational teaching in Kabbalah that every act of creation requires both a giving force (Light) and a receiving force (Vessel) is not limited to marital relationships. These dual forces also exist within each individual, regardless of their marital status. In every soul, there is both a masculine aspect (the drive to express, give, initiate) and a feminine aspect (the capacity to receive, nurture, and manifest). This internal balance is key to drawing Hashem’s blessing and actualizing one’s spiritual potential.
For single men and women, the absence of a physical partner does not prevent one from creating the proper conditions to receive Light from above. Instead, the focus shifts to developing harmony between one’s own inner Light and Vessel. For example, when a person engages in Torah learning, mitzvot, Tzedaka, acts of kindness, and prayer, they are activating the Light within themselves. When they cultivate humility, emotional depth, and openness to Hashem’s will, they are refining their inner Vessel. These spiritual preparations open channels of divine flow, allowing blessings to enter their lives in many forms—peace of mind, spiritual insights, meaningful relationships, and even material support.
The Zohar teaches that “אין הברכה שורה אלא בדבר הסמוי מן העין”—“Blessing only dwells in that which is hidden from the eye” (https://www.sefaria.org/Taanit.8b.13?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en). This applies especially to the hidden spiritual work that single individuals do to balance their inner masculine and feminine traits. When done with sincerity, it becomes a powerful act of divine service that draws down blessing not only for themselves but for the entire world.
Furthermore, the desire for union—whether for companionship, family, or spiritual partnership—is itself a holy longing, rooted in the design of Creation. Even before a person finds their partner, the yearning itself can be elevated and transformed into a vessel for spiritual growth, echoing the idea that Hashem created the world with a yearning to bestow good upon His creations.
In summary, the model of Light and Vessel, while fully realized in the sacred union of marriage, is also fully active within each individual soul. A single person, by living with awareness, balance, and connection to Hashem, can draw immense divine Light into their life and prepare themselves as a vessel for even greater blessings in the future—including, when the time is right, the formation of that ultimate partnership through which the highest Light may flow.

{||}

Click/Touch here to listen to the Daily Zohar

<img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-21" title="Daily Zohar Pinchas-4845 Scanning from right to left top to bottom" src="https://staging.dailyzohar.com/wp-content/uploads/parashot/images/dzp-4845.gif" alt="Holy Zohar text.
