וּבְזִמְנָא דְּשַׁלְטָא אִילָנָא דְּחַיִּי, אִתְכַּפְיָיא אִילָנָא דְּטוֹב וָרָע, וְלָא יְהֵא לְעַמֵי הַאָרָצּוֹת, אֶלָּא מַה דְּיָהֲבִין לוֹן תַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים, וְאִתְכַּפְיָין תְּחוֹתַיְיהוּ, וּכְאִלּוּ לָא הֲווֹ בְּעָלְמָא. <\/p>\n
וְהָכִי אִיסוּר וְהֶיתֵּר, טוּמְאָה וְטַהֲרָה, לָא אִתְעַבָּר מעַמֵּי הָאָרֶץ. דְּמִסִּטְרַיְיהוּ לֵית בֵּין גָּלוּתָא לִימוֹת הַמָשִׁיחַ (לגבייהו) אֶלָּא שִׁעְבּוּד מַלְכִיּוֹת בִּלְבַד דְּאִינּוּן לָא טַעֲמִין מֵאִילָנָא דְּחַיִּי, וְצָּרִיךְ לוֹן מַתְנִיתִין בְּאִיסוּר וְהֵיתֵר טוּמְאָה וְטָהֳרָה. אֶלָּא יִהוֹן מְבוּזִים קֳדָם תַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים, כְּגַוְונָא דַּחֲשׁוֹכָא קַמֵּי נְהוֹרָא, דְּעֵרֶב רַב אִינּוּן עַמֵּי הָאָרֶץ אִינּוּן חֲשׁוּכִין. וְלָא אִתְקְרִיאוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶלָּא עַבְדִּין זְבִינִין לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּגִין דְּאִינּוּן כִּבְעִירִין. וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ. <\/p>\n
וְיִשְׂרָאֵל אִתְקְרִיאוּ אָדָם, וּמִנַיִן דְּאִית בְּהוֹן בְּעִירָא וְאָדָם. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (יחזקאל לד) וְאַתֵּן צֹּאנִי צֹּאן מַרְעִיתִי אָדָם אַתֶּם. וְאַתֵּן צֹּאנִי צֹּאן מַרְעִיתִי, אִינּוּן עַמֵּי הָאָרֶץ, טָבִין, מִסִּטְרָא דְּטוֹב. אָדָם אַתֶּם, תַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים. <\/p>\n

וְעֵרֶב רַב כְּגַוְונָא דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן, (שמות כ) וַיַּרְא הָעָם וַיָּנוּעוּ וַיַּעַמְדוּ מֵרָחוֹק. הָכִי יְהוֹן רְחִיקִין מִן פּוּרְקָנָא, וְיִחְמוּן לְתַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים, וּלְעַמָא קַדִּישָׁא בְּכָל הַאי יְקָר, וְאִינּוּן רְחִיקִין מִינַּיְיהוּ. וְאִי בָּעוּ לְאִתְחַבְּרָא בַּהֲדַיְיהוּ מַה כְּתִיב בְּהוּ, (שמות יט) לֹא תִגַּע בּוֹ יָד כִּי סָקוֹל יִסָּקֵל אוֹ יָרֹה יִיָּרֶה. בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא יִתְקַיֵּים בְּהוּ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, (דברים לב) יְיָ בָּדָד יַנְחֶנּוּ וְאֵין עִמּוֹ אֵל נֵכָר, וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ אֵין מְקַבְּלִין גֵּרִים לִימוֹת הַמָּשִׁיחַ. וְאַנְשֵׁי חַיִל וְיִרְאֵי חֵטְא מְסוֹבְבִים מֵעִיר לָעִיר וְלֹא יְחוֹנָנוּ, וּמַחֲרִימִין עֵרֶב רַב בֵּינַיְיהוּ. וְלָא יַהֲבִין לוֹן בְּאַתְרִין סַגִּיאִין אֶלָּא דָּבָר קָצּוּב, דְּלָא יְהֵא תְּקוּמָה לִנְפִילוּ דִּלְהוֹן, וַאֲפִילּוּ חַיִּי שָׁעָה. וְכָל חֲכָמִים וְאַנְשֵׁי חַיִל וְיִרְאֵי חֵטְא בְּצַּעֲרָא בְּדוֹחֲקָא בְּיַגוֹנָא, חֲשִׁיבִין כִּכְלָבִים.
